My day had a great start. One of my closest friend got a baby girl today, another niece for me. Then, watching news about Obama and his historic win with breakfast in the morning was a perfect morning.
But the day became quite lousy as it passed, came back early from work, though I have lots of work. Wanted to go shopping, didnt do that... started watching this movie "Fashion" starring Priyanka Chopra. She looks very nice and has acted really well.
The movie does talk about the Fashion world, but what is more striking is the "Ambitions" part. Being over-ambitious, dreaming the heights of success can sometime be really the negative aspect of your life. I have always been an ambitious person, sometime might be over-ambitious one. I've always wanted the best in life and does not settle down for the average. But with that, I realized that I am not enjoying my today, and enjoying today is more important and that is what it matters. I learned a little from this new mommy friend of mine and some more friends on how to enjoy your today irrespective of how good or bad it is... and I like it now, and I am happy. :)
"Fashion" had another dialogue "Sapne dekhte hai tab hume koi nahi batata, ki unke badle mein hume kitna kuch khona padega". It literally means, when we dream no one tells us how many sacrifices we have to make. And it hit me.... we know what we might get with that dream, but we dont know what all we will lose. And I can relate to it so much... Coming to US was a dream, and I am happy with what I have achieved, but I didnt know then what all will I lose while achieving this dream. Dont want to make a list of the losses... :-).
On a closing note, Being ambitious is still good... though there has to be a line between living today and being ambitious. Makes sense or just a rant? :-)

Liked your post..But depends on your ambitions how far you want to go..if coming to US and landing a job was your ambition then you have succeeded.
But if that was just a step to your ladder it is upto you how far you want to go for to chase your dreams.
Another thing is maybe the sacrifices which you made or are planning to make... you can still achieve your dreams without making any..by a little compromise or by bending yourself a little...
DOnt know if it'll make any sense to you.. :)
One important aspect of being ambitious is aligning your ambitions with your desires and happiness. If you have those two aligned, you will never regret the sacrifices you've had to make.
Those that understand that and live by those principles will always be happy, and will never look back and wonder: "What if...?"
The term that's applicable here is: "Buyer's remorse"!
How does it apply? Simple: Buyer's remorse is the regret of having bought something! In this case, you've bought what you've always wanted, and what you've paid is the sacrifices you've had to make.
How does one overcome "Buyer's remorse"? Simple again: You have to be convinced about something before you make the purchase.
That's life. Everything in life is connected. You can take a lesson from one aspect of life and apply it to another. That's why life is a constant learning experience! :-)
Enjoy! :-D
Thanks for updating the link in the community site. Y'day had been searching for it for soooo long !!
Yeah, I saw that movie too. But, jab hum woh sapne dekhte hai... dil k ek kone mein, hum khud bhi jaante hai, k hame kya khona padega. Ya toh hum unse anjaan bane rehte hai... ya toh phir hame uss success ki chamak mein itne andhe ho jaate hai.. ke use dekh nahi paate.
And as I believe, life will always balance itself. Too philosophical, I know !! :P
Being happy and being ambitious are two completely different aspects. Being ambitious doesn't mean that you cannot be happy or you have to struggle to be happy.
Ambition can be related to an apex of a mountain and the path to reach there depends on your perception and your choice.
Sacrifices..... I just know one thing, No Pain No Gain....
Movies are to motivate you and not to pull you back. You remember the dialogue from the movie but you don't remember the end. She is vitalized and ready to achieve everything again. That is the true moral of the story, NO MATTER HOW MANY SACRIFICES YOU HAVE TO MAKE, NEVER EVER EVER GIVE IT UP....!!!!!
hey Jo, nice to see you writing, nice start
nice post
@tejas : nice comment !!! :)
There comes a moment in life when there's a choice to be made between personal happiness and ambitions. What would be yours ?
"Beware of what you wish for, for you sure will get it!"
"Dreams are not what you see while sleeping. Dreams are what that doesn't let you sleep"
First one was a rather dim one liner graffiti among tens of others on the wall beside my room. Someone years ago had written it.
Second was statement from Bindra on Times Of India front page in big bold letters the day Bindra won Olympics Gold, the first ever by India (imagine that, 1 billion people and not a single gold in 106 years!)
Yes, we win some, we lose some. One has to think about what length we are happy to go, to achieve something. If it makes sense, by all means go for it, and never regret it, whether you get it or not.
A lot of people dream, few have ambitions, and even fewer have guts and initiative to follow through their ambitions. I feel happy for those whose are able to,
At least in India, you anyways lose a lot even if you do nothing. Better lose it in pursuit of your dreams rather than sitting idle!
If you're an Indian, AND you're a woman - there's nothing to lose more. You can only go up, but only if you try!
@annonymous - you know me quite a bit.
@tejas - i am not regretting on the decision, just thinking about the decision.
@dolphin - good to see your comment!
@developingmyself - Agreed, but I didnt say anything about giving up. :-)
@Jo - Thanks Dear :-). Keep reading, you would already know most of it though. :-)
@me - Completely understand your point.
I believe in all that you said, success comes with a price tag. Its you who decides how much you wanna pay for it. As they say, there is nothing called as free lunch in this world. We need to accept the fact.
I had also thought about this many times and have always resorted to the same conclusion; Which say no doubt you will have many losses and sacrifices on your way to successes but at the end all that matters is how you lived your life when you were travelling towards you goal. I find it interesting, to play these mind games with yourself everyday making decision on what would you sacrifice for achieving certain goal? Thinking on weather the sacrifice is worth the effort.
I believe life is a journey and it has to lived per day. Ambition for me is a tool to be better every day to reach to your personal best, to know yourself better, it is the vigor which will help you live better and get more out of your day. Without ambition life certainly can be been good and you can get all you want but at the expense of not trying yourself, not challenging yourselves enough to know that there exists a better part in you which no one, not even you, have found out.
So as I said it makes sense to be ambitious and for me that's the way of life, but one has to be sure that the path which you choose to reach your journey is most beautiful. As they say, Life is journey and not a destination. To strike a balance between ambition, achievement and solace is what we call a game of life and this combination makes it so interesting. :)
The post is awesome and makes you think over some points. Here is what I think about it...there are three things you are talking about: 1. Dreams 2. Ambition 3. Sacrifice
Dream is the goal or the aim you wish you could achive. When it becomes an ambition you strive hard to achieve it. When dream becomes ambition there is nothing you sacrifice but everything clubs to achieve that amibition. That ambition is an ambition only because it demands something which requires some kind of action which is off track and that is what makes this ambition your dream.
Second thing is being ambitious good or bad. Being ambitious is certainly good only if you set your priorities right at right time and make achieving your ambition as a journey not as a short walk. And I believe one should cover this journey with lot of happiness, determination, right decision at right time.
This is just my point of view and don't know whether it even make sense..
Moti good luck with everything..:)
I got some of the meaning from that blog, not from the lines that you wrote but behind those lines. I guess next time when you watch Dostana and read this review of yours it would sound a little different. Do watch dostana and read it again and please do tell me if it was different or the same. Okay?
Hi Poonam, just thought of replying to one of your wonderful, well written blog . i wanted to do it 2 days ago when power went off , and I could not post it . Now its 4 am here and I just finished watching the movie FASHION . after watching the movie I completely agree with your view regarding ambitions , dreams . You have put it in a very simple way on your blog . I would just like to add a small piece to it , that although each of us knows and understands very well about what is right and what is wrong ... the DIFFERENCE is very few of us ACT ON IT . I'm not a correct person to advice sumone , But yes after reading to your Blog , I could not stop myself from expressng my thoughts . I wish if it can make a difference to even one person's thinking and help him make a right decision ,, its really worth expressing these thoughts .. Thanks , Poonam 4 d inspiration AND KEEP GOINGGG !!! wish u all d best . Bye & tc
Hey nice written, Actually the line you have written from movie fashion
"Sapne dekhte hai tab hume koi nahi batata, ki unke badle mein hume kitna kuch khona padega".
It really mean to me also i have also scrafice so may thing and know i had come to know that it was not worth for that dream.
Anyway your is really impressive one.
This is the first time i am writting any comment to the post hope you will like my comment.
Your posts are very thoughtful and Poonam-ish :). What DevelopingMyself said makes sense - one can live a meaningful life with or without ambition. "Enjoy the lighter things in life, and deeper joy will follow".
@hitesh-I saw Dostana, liked it just because I laughed a lot. It didnt really have any story and I did not think at all while watching or after the movie. But then there are movies with a story and which make you think. Though Fashion portrayed a little dark side of the industry, why to ignore it saying it is bad, just accept it. Agree?
@Dolly - It certainly makes sense
@PBonds, Amit - Thanks for the comments.
@Llama - I agree, lighter things are the most joyful ones. :).
Yeah fashion was not ignored... :)
Nice post ,its law of nature "To achieve one thing you have to leave other". Actions are always a matter of choice at that particular moment or that time. You being ambitious or over-ambitious for that matter was what was keeping you happy and contended then, so it's just a change of perspective now. And yes life can even be enjoyed in it's simplest form, but a little more won't harm it anyways ;) so enjoy your grand success :)
